Shelby is a very sweet 13yr old Border Collie Mix who came to Murrayhill Veterinary Hospital because she was not feeling well and had pale gums. Dr. Zawadzki took radiographs and found Shelby had Pyometra which means her uterus was filled with pus. Pyometra’s are commonly found in intact female dogs and can be fatal if left untreated. Shelby had an Ovariohysterectomy done that same night and her uterus was removed. Because Shelby’s family acted quickly, Shelby has improved greatly and even at 13 she has a new lease on life. Shelby’s story helps show the importance of having our pets spayed at an early age and is best if done before their first heat cycle to help keep them happier and healthier longer. Please read more about the importance of Ovariohysterectomy (Spay) and Neutering your pet at the next posting. Murrayhill Veterinary Hospital is dedicated to the health of your pet and we would like to help alleviate one of the big concerns for having this procedure done: cost. “Like us” on Facebook and mention this post when scheduling your spay or neuter and receive 25% off your pets spay or neuter surgery between now and December 2011.

There are many reasons why your pet may require emergency care. At Murrayhill Veterinary Hospital, we feel it is so important for your pet to see a doctor if you notice any abnormal behavior like vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, inappropriate or increased urination, excessive drinking, limping and any signs that make you feel your pet is in distress. Catching these warning signs early can reduce the amount of veterinary care needed to get your pet back to their normal happy self. However, there are a few very common reasons why emergency pet care is given. Here are the three most common reasons:
1. Ingestion of Foreign Objects
There are many objects in the household that if swallowed could create serious stomach damage in your pet. Anything from string to a bottle cap could prove to be fatal. If you believe that your animal has ingested an object that could be unsafe, seek emergency pet care immediately. Reduce the risk of this by keeping your house tidy and giving your pet appropriate and safe toys to play with.
2. Poisoning
There are many toxins in your house that can harm your pets. The obvious ones include medications, chemicals, glue, nicotine, anti-freeze and many household plants like lilies. However, foods like chocolate, grapes, macadamia nuts, sugar free gum, alcohol, tea, onions and bread dough can be harmful to your animal as well. If you believe that your pet has ingested something hazardous to its health, take him in for veterinary care immediately.
3. Bone Fracture, Wounds and Lacerations
This could include wounds that are the result of a fight with another animal, being hit by a car, run-ins with sharp objects or even jumping down off of beds or porches. Your pet may have noticeable blood marks or limping. Many of our pets are stoic and will hide their pain and symptoms. For these pets you will have to look for the subtle signs like wincing, decreased activity, and shying away from your touch. If your pet has incurred any type of wound, it is important for your pet to see a doctor immediately.
Fast emergency pet care is essential to the wellbeing of your pet. Do not hesitate to call the emergency veterinary hospital if you notice something seriously wrong with your animal.
